Please find below a list of frequently asked questions we have collected for 'BioShock 2':


Q: During setup I get the error message: 'Release date check failed'.
A: Please follow the steps below to manually perform the release date check.

Important: This can be done before you start the setup / installer of 'BioShock 2' or after the game has been installed already.


  1. Download the Manual Release Date Check tool here: http://download.securom.com/support/bioshock2/OfflineActivatorTool.zip
  2. Unpack the zip archive and launch the OfflineActivatorTool.exe
  3. The welcome screen asks you to save the ActivationRequest.dfa file on your hard disc (for example, to your Desktop)
  4. Open your browser to the website http://www.digitalworksweb.com/securomsupport/bioshock2_unlock_rc/
  5. Enter the path to the ActivationRequest.dfa file and the security code in the website and press the "Submit Query" button
  6. Download the ActivationResponse.lic file to your hard disc (for example, to your Desktop)
  7. Return to the activation dialog browse to the ActivationResponse.lic file you've stored in the step above and press the "Activate" button
  8. You will get a success message
  9. You can now run the setup of 'BioShock 2' or if you have already installed it, start the game via the shortcut.

Q: I get the error message: 'Emulation detected error (e.g. 2500)'.
A: Please unmount all images, deactivate running emulation software and put the original disc in your drive.
If the error message persists, please download the SecuROM™ Diagnostics Tool and follow the instructions on the website.

Q: I get the error message 'SecuLauncher: failed to start application. [2000]'
A: Please note that this is a common issue when the Visual Studio C++ redistributable and/or Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 was not installed properly.

  1. To solve the issue, please open your Windows Explorer/My Computer and switch to the following directory on the
    'BioShock 2' Disc #1: e.g. E:\Support\Redist\G4WL\.
    In that folder you will find a file called 'vcredist_x86.exe'. Please execute this application and follow the installation wizard.
  2. Please also download and install the latest version of Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.

After you have successfully installed the Visual Studio C++ redistributable and Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 please perform the recommended reboot. 'BioShock 2' should start fine now.

Q: I bought 'BioShock 2' through Steam but i can't find my serial number.
A: To receive your serial number (after you have downloaded and installed 'BioShock 2'), please do the following:


  1. Open Steam
  2. Right-click 'BioShock 2'
  3. Click "Show Serial"

This is the serial number for 'BioShock 2'. Use this key to activate your game.

Q: I get the error message: 'The serial number was not found in the database.'
A: The number one problem with serial numbers is mistyping. Double check the characters you have entered. To help identify each character of the serial number correctly, please see common misinterpretations:


If this does not solve your issue, please send us a picture of your serial number.


Q: I get the error message: 'No proper connection could be made with the activation server.'
A: If you are having problems activating your game, please visit the SecuROM™ PA Manual Unlock Website where you can generate an unlock code and activate your game manually.

Q: I get the error message: 'Too many activations on different PCs or too many reactivations on the same PC have been performed.'
A: Please run the revoke tool, http://download.securom.com/support/bioshock2/bioshock2revoke.zip, on the PC where you have originally activated 'BioShock 2'. After revoking this activation, you will be able to activate your application on a different PC.
